Irene Dairy Farm

It seems like every Sunday in Jozi starts with sunshine but ends in a torrential thunderstorm.
This past Sunday it remained beautifully sunny all day and we decided to head out to Irene Dairy Farm near Centurion, for an “outsidey” lunch.
It’s an operating dairy farm that’s been around for ages.

Once you enter, you are greeted by a deli shop with fresh bread, tarts, cheese, milk, and tons of other delicious goodies.

There’s a cool “deck style” restaurant that has light meals, and of course, milkshakes! can you see the mist blowing on the side- perfect to cool you down on a hot day!
The food is simple and well priced, don’t expect anything gourmet.

After we ate, we took a walk around the farm. Saw adorable calfs, and cows grazing- love the third pic below 🙂 I have to admit that seeing the calfs in teeny tiny enclosures away from their mothers is kind of sad. It got me thinking that animals really shouldn’t have to live like that. But I guess we have to get milk/meat etc somehow, and if I was really serious about taking a stand against it, I would become vegan (which I couldn’t do right now.) Alas, I love ice cream, cheese and cappucino too much to even think of giving up!

We also saw the cows being milked. As soon as they are let out of their enclosures, they  “release” all the grass/water they’ve been consuming. OMG! Eww! I couldn’t handle it, so we went back to the shop, picked up some groceries and headed home.
Loved the experience- give it a try and see what you think.
