Burn the Floor at Joburg Theatre

I went to watch Burn the Floor last night- what a show! You all must have seen the billboards on various highways advertising the show. They use the tagline “this aint your grandma’s ballroom”, and I think that sums up the show perfectly!

Burn the Floor- The Temperature Rises Tour has just completed a hugely successful tour of the USA, China and Australia. The show features eighteen international championship dancers, some of which you’ll recognize from previous seasons of So You Think You Can Dance.

The show is risque and exhilarating. I spent most of it in awe of the female dancers’ bodies. They are so toned- but not in a gross muscular way, in a lean sexy way. The spectacular costumes change after almost every dance, and there is a band on stage as well as 2 excellent singers, which adds to the feel of the show. I have to give props to the costume designer. I always cringe when I watch ballet because the guys tights are so, well, tight. Here, the guys were wearing a cross between tights and pants- just tight enough to be on the right side of that sexy/cringe worthy line.

See what I mean about sexiness?!

The dancing is perfectly choreographed in such a way that you’ll marvel at how the dancers are actually able to get their bodies to move like that! The chemistry between the dancers is tangible, and at some points I found myself actually believing the tale being told by the song and dance.

The first half is about an hour long, towards the end of Act 1 I found myself feeling a little bored, as the dances were all becoming quite similar. That may have just been tiredness though, because I thoroughly enjoyed the second half, and it seemed the rest of the audience agreed as the dancers were rewarded with a standing ovation.

If you enjoy dance, you simply must go and check it out 🙂
