After gaining a bunch of weight after my wedding, I saw a dietitian and lost 8 kgs. I’ve now gained back 4 of these, but the only reason the other 4 (and more!) haven’t come back is because of key lifestyle changes that the dietitian taught me that I’ve adopted into my daily routine. For more on that, read this post. Given that I eat out ALL the time, it’s virtually impossible to slim down. I also hate cooking, which previously meant that I’d eat unhealthy takeaways all the time. Now, I’m far more aware of what I put into my body, and I seldom eat carbo-loaded takeaways. There are a few great spots in Jozi where you can have the convenience and delicious-ness of restaurant food without the kilojoules.
Here they are:
1. Rockets Express
So I definitely frequent Rockets Lolita’s in Parkhurst a lot more (I LOVE their tapas menu), but Rockets Express is a fantastic option for a healthy lunch. Here, you can build your own salad. Choose from a wide selection of bases including brown rice, cous cous, salad leaves or pasta, and add toppings to suit you. Everything is super fresh- just be prepared to wait because the proximity of gym loving investment bankers (my husband is one of them) makes this spot very popular, and hence very busy. If you’re the indecisive type, you’ll also find a few pre made salads to choose from.

2. Be- leaf
Founded by a food technologist and a pastry chef (I know!), Be-leaf believes (see what I did there) in fresh, delicious food, catering to the huge amount of offices in Sandton who previously only had horrible canteen fare or fast food to eat. They’ve got a pretty wide range of items on their menu, including breakfasts, smoothies, paninis and salads (pre made and make your own). I love that they offer warm salads too (although I don’t know how healthy they are), like a warm Mexican bean salad- bean mix, mature cheddar, spicy salsa, guacamole, creme fraiche, nachos and lettuce, R42. They even deliver in walking distance… although if you’re going with the salad vibe, you really should walk 🙂

3. Leafy Greens
If you feel like a bit of a drive, head to Leafy Greens, in Muldersdrift. It is a partially raw, vegan friendly restaurant situated in beautiful grounds. The smoothies are a win- try the Mango Lassi (made with agave and soya milk), or the Superfood Smoothie, with goji berries and spirulina. On the lunch menu, you’ll find a lot of raw items- like rice paper rolls, served with home made ginger, wasabi and sweet chilli dipping sauce, plus raw pizza, made with a buckwheat and flax base.
