It’s no secret that I’m a HUGE fan of the Saxon. Now that the Westcliff has closed down (which used to be my favourite since I got married there), the Saxon is definitely at the top of my list. The service is always amazing, the venue itself is to die for, and I’m just always super impressed after I go there, whether it’s to spend the night, have a meal, or even just have a spa treatment.
I’ve experienced the hotel’s high tea a few times. I love sitting on the terrace, listening to live sax music outside in the sunshine. A few months ago, the hotel has revised its high tea offering, and I can tell you, it’s just spectacular. A buffet is beautifully set up, tempting you with tartlets, cakes, meringues and the Saxon’s signature macaron. *Everything* I tried (yes, I did try everything) was delicious and unique. The pastry chef really goes all out to make things special, using only the best ingredients, like Valrhona chocolate (basically like the Lindt version of cooking chocolate) and gold leaf from France.
On the tea side, they actually have tea sommeliers who can guide you through the tea selection, which is YSWARA. I’m sure you’ve heard about this luxury brand, which is making waves all over Jozi. This is an African tea collection of rare leaves sourced and blended in Africa.
Now, onto pricing. High tea is R395 per person, which is a lot, I know. The difference between high tea here and anywhere else (where you’ll probably pay about half of this) is the experience. The Saxon’s high tea is definitely special occasion worthy, like all its other offerings too (spa, restaurants.) The Saxon isn’t the kind of place you would frequent every weekend (unless you’re a gazillionaire), but I don’t think it wants to be. It’s exclusive, intimate, and when you’re there, you feel like you’re a celebrity.
So I’d definitely recommend the high tea if you want to treat a loved one for a birthday, or maybe are meeting up with a friend who lives far away and is in town for a short time. You won’t be disappointed. Reservations can be made on 011 292 6000 or by email: firstname.lastname@example.org
