Luminance, SA’s only luxury, boutique department store (imo at least), has been around for almost a year, but I only set foot in it last week, at the launch of their Personal Shopping Experience. I went to the star studded store opening last year, but was ill so I had to leave early before the store was unveiled. I only ever go to Hyde Park at night when shops are closed, so somehow I just haven’t been in, and I didn’t make an effort to visit either because I didn’t think I was missing much. I was wrong.
Now that I’m not going to be earning a salary very shortly, my shopping habits have changed dramatically. I haven’t bought an item of clothing or a pair of shoes in months, and I’m okay with that- all the more reason to window shop and browse at dreamy stores. Luminance is just that. I picked up 2 items at last week’s event and they each had a price tag of R19k and R20k respectively. Now I’m sure there’s a market for that, it’s just not me. Nevertheless, the store is devastatingly beautiful, and you need to go, just to look around in admiration, even if you don’t buy anything. It’s more than a store- it’s an experience. There are cheaper items available along with some mainstream brands, like Bobbi Brown makeup. It’s not one of those boutiques where you get the side eye from staff if you don’t buy anything. The staff welcome you to browse and will assist you as much as possible.
The layout of the store is gorgeous, and reminds me of a smaller version of some of the exclusive department stores I visited in New York. Inside, you can find brands such as Carolina Herrera, Givenchy, L.K Bennett (know those nude heels Kate Middleton is ALWAYS wearing- they’re L.K Bennett), plus Oscar de La Renta. I even spotted a baby Dior rail!
A bit about the Personal Shopping Experience launch- as expected, there were tons of celebs, including Lalla Hirayama, Jen Su and Boity. We got amazing goodie bags at the end, before sipping on champagne and snacking on cheese.
So I really would encourage you to drop by the store and have some coffee in the Luminance Library- go on, give yourself just a taste of the high life. Even if you don’t buy anything, just being INSIDE the store makes you feel glamorous!
