Kievits Kroon Weekend Getaway- the Winelands of Gauteng

Kievits Kroon is one of my favourite weekend getaways. It’s about 45 minutes from Sandton, and it’s simply lovely. I’ve been there twice before: once with my husband and once with work on a conference, and I was lucky enough to return last weekend.
They call themselves the “winelands” of Gauteng and that’s quite fitting. As you drive in the view is breathtaking…

I’ve often paid alot to stay at a  certain place, and have been disappointed that a 5 star establishment doesn’t live up to expectations. Kievits Kroon is not rated, but the service and experience both exceed that of many 5 star places I’ve stayed at.

As soon as you arrive and park your car, there is someone outside reception to welcome you. Checking in was such a pleasure. Instead of queueing at reception, we were invited to sit down and enjoy a complimentary drink. A staff member sat down next to us and explained meal times and facilities to us. We were completely relaxed before even getting to our rooms!

After checking in, we went to our rooms. Our section of rooms was built during the World Cup. The rooms are big, modern and classy, with all the amenities you can think of: gowns, slippers, DSTV, a tea station. The only downside is that you have a view of the parking lot 🙁 I also found our section of rooms a bit disjointed from the rest of the lodge, which is designed to have a thatch/ country look. Our mini hotel didn’t seem to fit in very well, but that is a minor detail that doesn’t make much difference to the overall experience.

Obviously, with it being Winter we couldn’t swim in the outdoor pool- but just looking at it is spectacular. I can’t wait to return in Summer and take full advantage of the outdoor facilities.

How divine does it look?! If you want to visit in Winter, do not despair. The spa facilities are excellent and include multiple jacuzzis and a heated pool 🙂 These facilities are complimentary for guests between certain hours, but I’d highly recommend booking a spa package as these are such good value.
This is where you wait for your therapist to collect you

Heated indoor pool and 2 jacuzzis

Complimentary snacks at the spa reception
I am not exaggerating when I say I arrived at the spa with the worst back pain and I was planning to book an appointment with the physio on Monday. In a short 30 minute massage, my therapist completely eased my pain and since then all my pain has gone- what a relief!
After an afternoon nap, we went down to Granita restaurant for our 6 course wine paired dinner. I was really looking forward to this, especially after I had sight of the menu.

Gorgeous fireplace at Granita, I want one in my home!

Appetizer- ostrich

Granita has a lovely wine cellar that would be great for a private dinner

Starter- duck breast served with spiced pear, blue cheese quenelle and a merlot aniseed reduction

Soup- seared scallops in a seafood dill veloute served with pickled lemon, red cabbage and saffron froth

Main- pistachio, garlic and mint stuffed lamb noisette with braised lentils, a mushroom spring roll and port wine reduction
Chocolate mousse cake served with creme anglaise

I liked the food but wasn’t blown away by any of the courses except the dessert, which was delicious. The food was good, not excellent, but I did need to remind myself that I was at a hotel, not a  gourmet restaurant, and most hotels have food that is subpar.
We only finished dinner close to 11pm, and when we got to our rooms we saw that our bed had been beautifully turned down.

We slept in on Sunday and headed to breakfast just before it ended at 10am. The staff were still busy whipping up omelettes, poached eggs and waffles 🙂

I was SO excited when I saw that Kievits Kroon has its own kitty cats. I have 2 at home so it was great to find some to play with while on holiday 🙂
I would HIGHLY recommend Kievits Kroon for a romantic weekend away, or even some QT with the girls. The packages change seasonally, but the Winter spa package is only R1495 per person sharing- including accommodation, breakfast, dinner AND a half day spa experience. The dinner that is included is buffet- I’d advise upgrading to the gourmet dinner.

You can thank me when you return 😉
