Fun weekend at Montecasino

Some time ago, I won a night at the Southern Sun Montecasino hotel. Although Montecasino has alot to offer, I’m not a fan of the whole fake-italian indoor vibe. I much prefer being outdoors in Summer. However, we had a really good stay and took advantage of all Montecasino’s attractions being right on our doorstep.

I didn’t photograph our room because the hotel itself is what you’d expect from Southern Sun. Not bad, but not very special either. I was a bit annoyed that we were given 2 small double beds instead of a queen or king bed. Wtf? We had dinner at their restaurant, Punchinello’s in the evening and really enjoyed ourselves. It was pretty quiet for a Saturday evening, but the restaurant really has that old school fancy kind of vibe. I always lower my expectations when eating at hotel restaurants but this one was better than most. We enjoyed all our courses.

Starter: haloumi phyllo stack. There must have been like a kg of haloumi in this!

Main: king prawns

Dessert: ice cream trio

I didn’t enjoy our breakfast buffet at all. It felt very industrial, we had to queue for a table and they seemed to just be churning guests through the restaurant. We tried to finish breakfast as quickly as possible, and then went over to the Montecasino Bird Garden. I’ve been wanting to go for so long but just haven’t been able to find the time. Luckily Jozi was being good and we had perfect weather to explore the garden. I loved it, and at R48 a person (less for kids) I really think everyone should add this to their to do list  for the holidays.
We watched a really cool bird show, where we saw pelicans, toucans, a vulture and an owl. We then strolled around the gardens and looked at all the pretty birds.

I bought some nectar and fed the parakeets

I had a great morning at the bird garden and would definitely recommend that you check it out.

In other news, I’m going to Seychelles this weekend! It’s completely impromptu but somehow everything just fell into place at the last moment. After that, I’m going straight to Zimbali in Durban, and then to Dullstroom so this is Jozilicious bidding you farewell for the year!

Hope you all have a wonderful Christmas break.. I look forward to sharing all my 2013 adventures with you.

As always, thank you for reading and for all the support. I read and enjoy every single one of your comments, emails and tweets.
