High Tea at 54 on Bath
In fact, I love tea generally. There’s something so soothing about a cup of tea, it makes the bad times ok and the good times even better. Tea and a “delight”- even better!
Traditionally, high teas are done with girlfriends, and everyone dons a hat and a dress. This time, my hubby and I went to check out high tea at JHB’s latest hotel offering, 54 on Bath (which used to be the Grace).
The hotel reminds me of Protea Hotel Fire and Ice, but is more tasteful and opulent.
We were asked if we wanted to make use of the valet service, so all we had to do is drive up to the entrance of the hotel, and our car was parked for us! It was also waiting for us when we were ready to leave- so fancy 😉 Because it is brand new, everything is still sparkly and shiny 🙂 High tea is served in the lounge adjacent to the lobby.

I’ve done plenty of high teas before, but I have to say that in terms of value for money- this one ranks at the top. For R160 pp, we were treated to an endless supply of tea, as well as refills of all our sweet and savoury platters. I knew not to eat lunch so was starving when I arrived, but I still couldn’t finish everything we were given! Granted it was early January so we were the only people there, but the service was excellent- we literally had a waiter exclusively at our beck and call.
I’ve done high teas at other 5 star hotels like the Saxon and the Westcliff, but I’ve never been offered a range of whole spices to compliment my tea. I chose some mint and orange to accompany my chai tea and it was soo good.

Selection of dilmah teas on offer We also got given a tea timer, with different waiting times depending on the strength we wanted.

Kudos to whoever conceptualised this high tea- great attention to detail!

Oh my happiness!! That looks AMAZING… and well, I don’t have to explain my love for tea too!
I reckon we need to do a reunion doing just this 😉

I have always wanted to go for a high tea! Have you had one at the Oyster Box?
January 16, 2013 @ 7:30 am
Bailey: yes, a reunion is long overdue!
Vanessa: I actually have done one at the oyster box, was amazing! I think the best one is the Saxon but at R250 pp I’m not sure if it’s worth it…

I’ve never been for high tea. Going to Umhlanga in Feb, debating if it’s worth going to Oyster Box, it’s so expensive.

Go! The Oyster Box itself is stunning, and their tea offering is pretty amazing too 😉

I think the Saxon is terribly terribly overpriced and really not worth it. The high tea that I had there was plated – not eat as much as you like. I think I paid about R700 for 2.
They did however have a great selection of teas and I was really impressed that they took my vegetarian request really seriously – they didn’t put glaze on my mousse because it has gelatine in it. And they had real clotted cream with their scones, you don’t find that in Jozi very often.
Looking forward to trying 54 on Bath!
