Review: Life Restaurant at Waterfall Corner

I’m no stranger to Life- I frequent the Hyde Park branch, always ordering the same thing (the prawn pizza- I love it!)

I almost didn’t review the Waterfall restaurant at all because the menu is the same as that of Hyde Park’s, but I’m so glad I did because it has a completely different vibe. The space is indoor/ outdoor and light and airy, with an eye catching circular “theatre bar”, meaning sushi, cocktails and coffees are made in front of you.



During my interview with owner, Maira Koutsoudakis, I learnt that the Life group of companies is comprised of the restaurants we are familiar with, as well as an interior design company, plus a company that focuses on architecture and creative strategy. Now the beautiful design made sense!

Upon looking closely at the décor, one realizes how much thought and effort went into every tiny detail. Being in close proximity to the horse stables, Life extended that theme by placing hay bales on the floor and polo sticks on the wall. The concept is “barefoot luxury”- Life recognizes that people want an upmarket dining experience but don’t always want fine dining- so it offers simple, flavourful food with an emphasis on quality- fish, for example, is flown in daily from Cape Town. Life is a super trendy “see and be seen” spot, and I particularly love the vibe at midday on a weekend.

We tried a few of the restaurant’s signature dishes, including the slow roast lamb, R128, tender and rich with flavour, as a result of being cooked for over 7 hours in the pizza oven plus a selection of Mediterranean tapas, like squid heads, calamari, and lemon butter prawns. We topped all that off with some delicious cocktails served in jam jars.

For dessert, we tried a selection. The chocolate Nutella pizza  was ah-mazing. The other desserts, eaton mess and chocolate fondant, were a little disappointing. The fondant was doughy and not gooey, while the eaton mess was overflowing and  difficult to eat.  I’ve had the caramel cheesecake at the Hyde Park branch, and it is one of my favourite cheesecakes ever.
